Shoes are core to your travel wardrobe.
While I always start packing for a holiday by getting out all my favourite clothes, it is the shoes that are the biggest influence on what actually makes it into my suitcase.
Shoes are generally heavy and take up a lot of space compared with clothes, so the best way to pack lean is to take a small number of versatile shoes.
When you are travelling with kids you are either –
- on your feet all day exploring a new part of the world;
- going to a beach/pool/water park; or
- lounging around a resort
(I’m assuming you’re having a warm weather holiday!)
So you only need 3 pairs of shoes –
- Extremely comfortable walking shoes,
- A sandal that can handle heat and water, and
- Something with a little bit of pretty.

Walking Shoes
A stylish sneaker is the ultimate comfort shoe and some version of this MUST be in every suitcase. When you’re travelling with kids, even if you’re spending a week at a resort in Fiji, a good walking shoe will still be the most practical thing to wear on the plane and will have you ready to race after runaway children when you’re out and about exploring.
This is what you need when you’ll be on your feet all day, pounding the pavement in a new city, visiting a zoo or letting it all hang out at a theme park.

2. Birkenstocks
When you need a beach-friendly shoe that is also very comfortable for lots of walking, it’s hard to beat Birkenstock. You could be hanging at the hotel pool, having splash time at the beach or sightseeing on a hot day, but whatever you’re doing your toes will be loving you!
I wore mine (I’ve got the classic Arizona in white (4)) all over Turkey and Greece way back before kids. I love that they’re back in fashion now!

3. Evening Sandals
You can often get away with no heels on holiday. Even on our Disney Cruise I saw ladies looking spectacular on formal night wearing a smart dress with an embellished flat sandal. Evening sandals are always acceptable. They take up far less space in your suitcase and can be worn during the day too if you are not on your feet for too long.
