The catchy toe-tapping songs in this brand new, high-energy production of Singin’ in the Rain had me jigging about in my seat. I adore old-school movie musicals and was thrilled that this new show has mastered every aspect to create a production that well deserves the sell-out West End season and multiple Olivier Award and Helpmann Award nominations that it has received.
I was drawn in to this joyous world, filled up with happiness and wrapped in the charm and exuberance of this feel-good show.

Singin’ in the Rain is sheer entertainment
Cleverly staged, Singin’ in the Rain captures the warmth and effervescence of the 1952 legendary musical comedy film.
Often said to be the best movie musical ever made and certainly the most popular, Singin’ in the Rain (the movie) stars Hollywood musical superstar Gene Kelly. As director and choreographer as well, Kelly filled the film with incredible dance routines. But it is said to be the ultimate song and dance musical, because it is also packed with well-known and timeless songs.
Set in 1927, Singin’ in the Rain tells the story of the first Hollywood musical, when the silver screen found its voice and left silent movies – and some of its stars – behind. Don Lockwood is a silent movie star with everything he could want – fame, adulation and a well-publicised ‘romance’ with his co-star Lina Lamont. But Hollywood is about to change forever. There is rumour in the studio of a new kind of film, where the actors actually talk…and sing…and dance. Can Don and the uniquely voiced Lina make the transition and will chorus girl Kathy Selden fulfil her dream of stardom and capture Don’s heart along the way?

Bursting with exuberance
It may rain on stage, but this show is no wet blanket. It will have you bubbling up inside like a glass of vintage champagne!
There is a simplicity and subtleness to the staging that allows the exquisite beauty and colour of the production to leap out at you. The supremely talented cast in their stylish 1920s costumes are the focus, creating beautiful shapes and unexpected groupings that are clever and inspired.
Songs that sparkle and soar
Singin’ in the Rain is brought to life on stage in the most memorable way possible, with 12,000 litres of water raining down and splashing the first few rows of the audience!
Adam Garcia, star of TV and stage productions both here and in the UK, plays the lead role of Don Lockwood and this is his signature tune. Garcia is currently injured, however, his replacement Grant Almirall was incredible! A wonderful dancer with a voice to match.

Don Lockwood and his best friend Cosmo Brown make fun of Don’s dialogue coach in Moses Supposes, which segues into a slapstick-style dance routine. Cosmo is played by So You Think You Can Dance inaugural winner Jack Chambers, and he seems custom-made for this role. Bursting with personality and hilarious to boot, I could not wipe the smile off my face.

The old-fashioned sweetness of movie musicals from the 1940s and 50s is encapsulated in Good Morning. This classic song and dance routine is performed by Don, Cosmo and Kathy Selden, the object of Don’s affections. Gretel Scarlett, who plays Kathy, has a stunning voice, which she shows off to great effect in You are my Lucky Star, a wistful romantic love song.

Erika Heynatz as Lina Lamont is a revelation! Just to sustain Lena’s rather unique voice throughout the show is incredible, but when the spotlight is on her the comedy flows. She is divinely nasty.
Escape the cold and wet outside and let Singin’ in the Rain transport you into a world of joy, romance and tinseltown glamour. Take your husband or avoid the babysitting fees and go with your mum or a friend like I did.
