I don’t think it’s any secret that I’m partial to a scarf. I love them as a way to inexpensively update last year’s favourite outfit. I love that you can stick to classic neutrals for your big ticket items and use a scarf to add some personality. A scarf is like a cushion. You can get your couch in a neutral colour that’s not going to go out of fashion in a hurry, then add your personality in your cushions. Easily changed with a new trend or when you just get a bit bored with them. Just like a scarf.
But it is in your suitcase that a scarf really comes into its own. At home you might wear many different colours and styles of clothes, but when you travel you’re generally trying to be fairly frugal with your wardrobe selection. You need practical clothes that are going to mix and match. But don’t leave your personality at home. A couple of extra scarves don’t weigh too much, but can really change the look of your outfits.
This time of year is ideal scarf weather. Occasionally I can do a scarf in summer, but usually the Sydney humidity just laughs at me. So autumn is when those neglected scarves can come out to play. This is when you can create a brand new outfit from perfectly ordinary jeans and a tshirt. I gave this a whirl recently (below left) with a super bright Sussan number that practically leapt off the rack into my waiting arms. It was a mild day, so I didn’t need it for warmth, but I loved the splash of colour it added. Similar to adding a necklace.
Another Sussan purchase was this cosy heavier-weight scarf in the middle pic above. Somehow these beautiful blues and pinks seem to go with everything I own, so it is getting lots of wear! It adds colour and interest, but also extra warmth. Sometimes this all you need on a cool day, rather than adding a jacket. Snoods are ideal for this extra warmth too. And lastly is this divine Target scarf (above right). I only bought this last week, so I would have thought it would still be in the shops, although I can’t find it online. For $30 this is fabulous quality. It is acrylic rather than wool, but is so big that it’s almost like wearing a poncho! Very cosy!
Scarves
If it’s mainly a pop of colour that you’re after to add some variety and interest to your outfits while you’re away, then this light to medium weight selection is sure to have something to suit.
6 is such a similar colour to the one I’m wearing above (left) and 10 is the one in the middle pic. 3 and 8 have a touch of that marsala colour that’s so much in fashion at the moment, but they won’t look dated when this colour of the moment goes out again. 1 and 2 are really drawing me in though. Both of these would look stunning with the greys, charcoals and navy that I wear a lot of at this time of year.

Snoods
If you’re heading somewhere cool on holiday, then welcome to the world of the snood! Sounds like something from Dr Seuss doesn’t it? Like the thneed from The Lorax. But wrap one of these snuggly numbers around your neck a couple of times and feel the warmth. Perfect over a long sleeve top or dress like in my centre pic above, or wear with a jacket for maximum cosiness.
I already have 8, but shockingly haven’t worn it yet. 10 is taunting me with its rose gold loveliness, 7 is like a faux fur vest – I think I would stroke it all day! But 4! Wow! That one is a talking point. You wouldn’t go unnoticed in that. But is that a good thing or bad??

Wraps
These are really huge at the moment. The ponchos and capes are a great alternative to a jacket. And so cosy! If, like me, your basic uniform is skinnies and boots, then these are fabulous. They look stylish and make a statement, while hiding a multitude of sins! The great thing about them is that they’re casual, they’re relaxed. You’re going to look good, but not overdressed.
Asos has a huge range of these gorgeous oversized scarves like 1 and 6. Like 8 and the Target one I’m wearing above (right), they are hugely versatile. You can wrap them around your neck, so that they look a bit like a snood, you can wear them like a poncho or, the one which is very handy on a plane, they double as a light blanket.
