There are high teas that welcome kids, and then there are high teas completely devoted to kids.
Every school holidays The Langham Melbourne creates an adorably themed kids high tea with sweet creations that show off the immense talents of the pastry chef.

Sing is the movie of the moment – even the preview was awesome. Did you see the mama pig belting out a number in the supermarket? So good. I must admit to some supermarket singing myself. Until I realise I’m singing along to some tragically ancient song that’s even older than me.
Sadly I missed Sing when hubster took the kids. (I couldn’t pass up the opportunity for time home alone on the school holidays!) But they all assured me it was the best movie they’ve seen in ages and we must get the DVD. I haven’t heard praise like that since Paper Planes!
These school holidays, The Langham’s kids high tea has a Sing theme.
The kids were eyeing off the cute koala cup, but I refused to stump up the extra cash.
When you arrive, the hushed grandeur of The Langham may make you wonder if you’ve come to the right place. Surely kids are frowned upon here? But no, head up to the top of the escalators to the Aria Bar and prepare to be indulged.
But, while this high tea is designed with kids in mind, you will not find small children racing around screaming. This is a 5 star atmosphere and 5 star behaviour is required. So your kids might want to bring some small activities to amuse themselves at the table. Especially if you hope for some adult conversation.
Is red cordial ever a good idea? The kids certainly thought so!

The nibbly yummies are definitely the highlight of this kids high tea – the pastry chef has taken their brief very seriously.
As well as the aforementioned macarons, microphones, cupcakes and cookies on the top layer, there are watermelon rabbits, cucumber sandwiches and fairy bread in the middle, and scones and sheep muffins on the bottom tier. Plus a mini cheeseburger in the Sing box.

We really couldn’t do it justice, but the kids tried most of it and proclaimed the sheep muffins the best. But seriously, we went to the morning session 10-11.30am and wasted so much food. Consider skipping breakfast so you can eat everything.
Kids high tea for adults
And what were the adults doing all this time you ask? Enjoying a quiet glass of sparkling if you don’t mind. Well Mum did. I was mainlining coffee as per normal.
On our side of the table Mum and I tried to relax and enjoy, which was partially successful. After being on the go for 5 days straight catching up with family and friends in Melbourne, the kids and I were all struggling a bit, and either the kids were more annoying than normal, I was more easily annoyed, or, most likely, a combination of the two.
The Wedgwood high tea that we chose was four tiers of sweet and savoury deliciousness. The scones (two plain, two date, wrapped up on the third tier) were particularly yum with ample jam, lemon butter and thick cream with which to smother them.
