Here in NSW there are only 2 1/2 weeks left of term 2. Eeek! If the year has got away from you a bit and you’re feeling like you’ve missed the boat on a mid-year getaway, then fear not! It is not too late!
If you’re keen for a dose of warm sunshine, a bit of medicinal vitamin D, then you might need to head to an airport.
1. Fiji

My number one pick for a warm mid-year break with littlies – average temperature 28 degrees, 3hr 50min to get there from Sydney, 4hr 25min to get back. Some islands I checked are booked out, but for a relaxing resort holiday, a week at the Outrigger on the Lagoon would be bliss! Estimated cost for 7 nights is $5,600 including flights from Sydney with Fiji Airways and 2 adults and 2 kids sharing 2 double beds in a hotel-style room (ie no kitchen facilities).
2. Far North Queensland

For a slightly shorter flight, then the Port Douglas/Palm Cove/Cairns region is a great option at this time of year – average temperature 26 degrees, 3hrs from Sydney. Between the reef, the rainforest and the great restaurants, it’s a bit more activity and food-focused than Fiji, but still perfect for a do-nothing pool/beach holiday. Very popular with Melburnians escaping winter, so you know that the coffee will be good! A week at Grand Mercure Rockford Esplanade Palm Cove in a 2 bedroom apartment would be approximately $4,200 ex Sydney flying Virgin.
3. Central Australia

For kids with energy to burn, how about our beautiful outback? Lots of fresh air, natural beauty, bushwalking and Aboriginal culture to soak up. Some of Intrepid Travel‘s tours allow kids as young as 8 or you could DIY. Estimated cost is $5,500 for a week at Sails in the Desert at Yulara (Ayer’s Rock Resort) for 2 adults and 2 kids sharing 2 queen beds in a hotel-style room (ie no kitchen facilities) flying with Jetstar out of Sydney. You will have additional car hire or tour costs to get around to all the sights though.
Assumptions –
All costs are estimated as at 11 June 2014 and are sourced from http://www.helloworld.com.au or directly from airlines or properties.
Travel dates used are 5 July – 12 July 2014.
Was this term shorter than normal? It seems to have gone super fast.
Will you be holidaying at home or away?
Or are your kids too young to have to confine yourself to school holidays?
