Melbourne has certainly held onto summer a lot longer than Sydney this year.
Sydney has been bang on average for March at 25 degrees, although positively deluged with rain. I believe there has only been 3 days so far this month when it hasn’t rained! Thank goodness two of those were for the Adele concerts!
Melbourne meanwhile has averaged 5 degrees more than usual at 28 degrees. Very toasty! I’m sure autumn will eventually arrive though, and chances are it will be considerably cooler when we visit in a few weeks. Before I know it I’ll be standing in front of my wardrobe trying to decide what to wear in Melbourne so I can pack my suitcase!
Although it is a bit sad to say goodbye to the hot weather, Melbourne does gorgeously crisp clear autumns so well. And a change of season means lots of new goodies in the shops. Less pastels and cool cottons. More jewel tones and luscious textures.
But suddenly I feel like all the fabulous summer dresses that I’ve lived in for months are inappropriate. Of course they can be worn in different ways, but it takes a bit of adjusting to get into the layering mindset.
What to wear in Melbourne in autumn

Long-sleeved Dresses
When wondering what to wear in Melbourne in autumn, you can’t go past a long-sleeved dress. A wee bit warmer than shorter or no sleeves, yet with the flexibility to either leave your legs bare with ankle boots or add some tights. For extra warmth add one of the jackets below.
Numbers 1 and 3 (velvet!) look so comfortable for everyday wear, 2 and 5 would look fabulous with some black ankle boots (aren’t the colours in 2 divine!), and I love the maxi length of 4 and 6 to keep those cool breezes at bay.

Jackets & Raincoats
Those cool Melbourne autumn mornings might need an extra layer. Luckily there are some fabulous jackets arriving in the shops.
Military is a big look this year and there’s denim in all sorts of styles, not just your traditional denim jacket. And the colours! Lush wine, nautical navy and GOLD! So much gold!

The Decjuba one is gorgeous in person. Soft and cosy. I wore it on the weekend to see a preview of the new stage adaption of Jackie French’s Diary of a Wombat at Darling Quarter (touring Australia throughout 2017). Ankle boots were brilliant at keeping my feet dry!

Ankle boots
I do get excited when I can start wearing ankle boots again. They’re just so versatile. With all the wet weather in Sydney lately, leather boots or gumboots have been the most practical option. And the short gumboots (3 and 5) are ideal. Alannah’s teacher changes into a pair of these at the end of the day and pops her flats into her bag. So clever!
And ankle boots are exactly what to wear in Melbourne in autumn too. Number 1 is perfect for those cold mornings at weekend sport (add a pair of woolly socks!), while 2 makes a subtle statement inspired by those glorious autumn jewel tones. 4 and 6 are just begging to be taken out to dinner. Perhaps with one of the long-sleeved dresses above?
