January is a good time to slow down. Take a breath. Soak up the lack of drop-offs, pick-ups and after-school activities, and just be.
It’s a wonderful time for a staycation. An opportunity to reconnect with family by doing an activity that you can enjoy together.
Long, light summer evenings are an open invitation to toast marshmallows over a fire.
We bought a simple fire pit recently and it has proved to be a favourite activity for the kids and a magnet for the neighbours to come and join in!

While you’re sitting side by side trying to get the perfect amount of gooeyness in your marshmallows, you could reflect on the year gone by together and find out what each other’s highlights and lowlights were.
Get all fancy and cook potatoes, corn cobs or even damper in the fire. Interview each other and get the conversation flowing.
Record this moment in time in a family photo (there’s self-timer apps for your camera phone to make sure everyone is in the photo) or write some notes in a memory book.
The My School Days books are fantastic for recording school memories.

Or ask your kids the same 20 questions each year and laugh together as you read back over previous year’s. These sheets are available to print for free.

An end of year recap and reflection is good for the soul. To be grateful for our blessings and to share the low points with the people who know and love us best.
