Sherlock Holmes would fit right in here. You know the divine Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law version with its slightly grubby, almost steampunk feel? The QT has this vibe down pat. It is dark and dramatic , with a theatrical feel that I love.
Do you do a regular date night? I think it’s a great idea, but we never seem to get around to it. In fact we haven’t used a babysitter in almost 3 years. A situation that I’m hoping to remedy soon. But when the grandparents come up to Sydney or we go down to Melbourne, we love to get out and about for a meal or a movie. Occasionally we even get away overnight.
A couple of months back we had the most divine stay at the QT Hotel in Sydney CBD. On the corner of George and Market Streets in the old Gowings building, it is smack bang in Sydney’s retail heartland. Halfway between the Queen Victoria Building and Pitt Street Mall.
Presumably they couldn’t change the exterior of the building, so instead they have embraced the Gothic/Art Deco surrounds to create an interior low on light, but bursting with atmosphere. On first glance it looks too cool for school. You imagine it being filled with hipster types discussing bands that you’ve never heard of. But in reality it seems to attract lots of couples who looked to me like they’d left a couple of kids at home, just like us.
As soon as you leave the footpath it is clear that this place is unusual. It’s more like going into a nightclub (if I can remember back that far!) with a nondescript door and two staff standing guard like unusally friendly bouncers, yet dressed like they’ve just come out of a burlesque show. All red bob wig, bowler hat and fishnets. Straight to a bank of lifts and up to reception. The lift music is incredibly cool and changes every time the lift doors close. I loved this feature except that I was keen to Shazam some of the songs to up the cool factor of my phone playlist, but they changed too quickly!
Once you check in and get your quick blast of cool in the lift, this is what awaits you at your room. The dark corridors felt hushed and private, but that hand’s a bit creepy don’t you think?
Our room was stylish and beautiful in a unique and quirky way. It was filled with creative decor and a dim, sexy ambience. So much detail. Endless beautiful things to look at. A stylish stool, an amazing bath, a display case full of glassware. This was not a bland box. It was the perfect environment to bunker down, shut out the world, order room service, soak up the free movies and wifi, and reconnect with your partner.
Everywhere we went we received excellent service from staff who know what they’re doing but are also welcoming and friendly. No ultra-cool style snobs here. Sitting at breakfast I felt we could have been in New York. Or perhaps Paris with our waitress’s gorgeous French accent.
