Sitting in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, an hour north of the city on a ridge overlooking the Hawkesbury River is Pie in the Sky cafe in Cowan.
Enormously popular with cyclists of both the human-powered and motor-powered persuasion, this unassuming cafe makes for an easy Sunday drive to get out of the city and in amongst some natural beauty.

Take the scenic road to Pie in the Sky Cowan
Make a day of it by detouring via the Berowra Waters Ferry to entertain the kids, then give them a run around a little further down the road from the cafe overlooking the Hawkesbury.

Berowra Waters Ferry
Get off the main roads and take the windy Galston Road down and up Galston Gorge, crossing Berowra Creek, to reach the Berowra Waters Ferry. This route passes right by the wonderful Fagan Park with its international gardens and vast playgrounds if you feel like stopping off for an explore.
It will take just over an hour to reach the ferry taking this scenic route from central Sydney. The Berowra Waters Ferry is a free cable ferry, which operates on demand 24 hours 7 days a week. There’s five of these cable ferry crossings throughout the Hawkesbury River system.
You drive onto a platform, it takes about 3 minutes to cross Berowra Creek, then you drive off the other side. Very easy and quite cool!
Pie in the Sky
Keep going for about half an hour from the ferry to Pie in the Sky. On a fine weekend the car park will be filled with motorbikes. These guys and girls of all ages give the place a wonderfully social vibe as they sit around chatting over lunch.
Unsurprisingly, Pie in the Sky Cowan specialises in pies! They have 22 different flavours, including some particularly delicious fruit pies, perfect for dessert. There are a few other options to eat, but pies are definitely the focus. Lucky for us we love pies! And these ones are excellent.

Hawkesbury River
5 minutes down the road is the peaceful Hawkesbury River. Rather than racing across it on the M1 towards Newcastle, taking the Pacific Highway from Pie in the Sky lets you meander across the river to take in the view from the water’s edge.
Turn around and head back across the magnificent bridge, turning off to the waterside Estuary Restaurant. Here you will find parking, seating and open space for enjoying the view across the water. Perhaps grab a coffee to enjoy in the sunshine from Estuary’s takeaway window.
